The Contribution of Accreditation Standards in University Laboratories to Quality in Higher Education: The Case of Turkey
Abstract
Accreditation of university laboratories according to the TS EN ISO 17025 standard is extremely important in implementing high quality standards in laboratories and obtaining reliable results. Accreditation shows that laboratories operate in accordance with internationally accepted standards and that their results are reliable. This study examines the current status, distribution and effects of accreditation on laboratory performance of university laboratories accredited according to the TS EN ISO 17025 standard in Turkey. The research is based on data from the Turkish Accreditation Agency (TÜRKAK) and the Higher Education Information Management System (YÖK).
The research findings show that university laboratories constitute a certain percentage of the total of 2,181 active accredited institutions in various fields throughout Turkey. University laboratories are mostly accredited in accordance with the TS EN ISO/IEC 17025 (for testing and calibration laboratories) and TS EN ISO 15189 (for medical laboratories) standards. The Marmara and Aegean regions stand out as the regions with the most accredited laboratories. This situation is thought to be related to the diversity and development of the industry and the large number of universities and research institutions in these regions.
The study reveals that the accreditation processes of university laboratories have positive effects on laboratory performance and reliability. Accreditation increases the participation of laboratories in international collaborations and their funding opportunities. This increases the research capacity and scientific contributions of universities, thus increasing Turkey's competitiveness in the field of science and technology.
As a result, the accreditation of university laboratories increases the quality of higher education institutions' education and research activities and ensures that they obtain reliable results. This process increases the scientific reputation of universities and will maximize the reliability of the data obtained in scientific studies. The fact that universities in Türkiye attach more importance to accreditation processes and continuously improve these processes will increase the country's global competitiveness in the field of science and technology.
