Behavior of Low-Strength Concrete Confined by High-Strength Composite Layer under Axial Loading

Öz

This study investigates the behavior under axial loading of low-strength concrete under a composite confinement layer consisting of fiber-reinforced high-strength mortar and a reinforcement mesh (geogrid). Within the scope of the experimental program, low-strength (10-15 MPa) cylindrical concrete specimens with dimensions of 150x300 mm were confined using high-strength mortar containing 2% steel or polypropylene fibers and geogrids with varying numbers of layers. Axial compression tests were conducted at the Mersin University laboratory using a 3000 kN capacity computer-controlled concrete testing machine, and the data were recorded using a TDS-530 data acquisition unit. To ensure that the confinement layer provided only a passive confinement effect, an axial load was applied directly to the core concrete using specialized steel plates. The critical parameters investigated included the thickness of the high-strength mortar (15 and 25 mm), fiber type, reinforcement mesh type, and number of layers. The effects of these parameters on the axial strength, energy dissipation capacity, and lateral deformations were systematically evaluated. The results demonstrated that the proposed confinement technique significantly enhanced the strength and deformation capacity (ductility) of low-strength concrete. It was determined that a thicker mortar layer (25 mm) primarily increased the strength, whereas an increased number of reinforcement mesh layers contributed more significantly to the ductility. Furthermore, the findings revealed that the use of polypropylene fibers generally yielded better results in terms of strength and ductility than steel fibers and effectively limited the crack widths.
