Bio

Dr. Pelin Aytemiz is an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Communication at Başkent University researching on social and cultural visual history of Turkey. She received her Ph.D. from Visual and Cultural Studies in the Department of Graphic Design at İhsan Doğramacı Bilkent University. The title of her dissertation is “Representing Absence and the Absent One: Remembering and Longing Through Mourning Photography”. This study aims to establish an account of mourning through photographic constructions, which can be considered as a meditation of the mourner on the oscillation of the presence/absence of the deceased. Her research interests are everyday life, visual culture, histories of photography, digital photo modification, mourning, death and short film. Her work focuses on critical film analysis, vernacular photography, local visual culture in Turkey and social history of photography.
