Ethical Principles and Publication Policy

Akademik Gıda is a peerreviewed journal that publishes original research and review articles in food science and technology. It is issued quarterly by Sidas Media Agency Advertisement Consultation Ltd. (Çankaya, İzmir, Türkiye). To enhance the journal’s overall scientific quality, the publisher has established the following guidelines.

Editorial Policy

Akademik Gıda promises that all submissions are handled with the Principles of Transparency and Best Practice in Scholarly Publishing by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE). Before submitting a manuscript, authors are strongly encouraged to read the journal’s Instructions for Authors. Authors should also follow the European Association of Science Editors (EASE) Guidelines for Authors and Translators of Scientific Articles to be Published in English. For research involving human or animal subjects or data, authors must adhere to the recommendations of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE).

Peer Review

All submissions are evaluated for originality and the quality of their scientific content.

All manuscripts first undergo an initial screening in the editorial office for technical compliance and overall quality, followed by an internal review by the technical and scientific editors.

After this preliminary assessment, editors may decline to send a manuscript for formal peer review if it (i) falls outside the journal’s scope, (ii) lacks sufficient technical merit, (iii) is fragmentary or offers only marginally incremental findings, or (iv) is poorly written.

If the manuscript is considered suitable for further evaluation, it proceeds to a doubleblind peer review by at least two independent reviewers to ensure the quality of manuscripts accepted for publication.

If revisions are requested, the revised version is evaluated by the reviewers, and the editors make the final acceptance decision based on their recommendations. If necessary, further revision may be required to meet all reviewer expectations.

The final, accepted version is forwarded to the technical editor for galley production, and the authors receive the proof for a final check before publication.

All articles are then posted online as PDF files in their final form and indexed in databases with assigned DOI numbers.

Submission Fee

There is a 2000 TL submission fee for all manuscripts submitted on or after February 1, 2025.

The submission fee may be waived for articles submitted in English by foreign author(s).

Confidentiality

Editors handle all manuscripts submitted to Akademik Gıda in strict confidence. Except for sharing with assigned reviewers, they do not disclose any information about submissions to third parties, unless there is suspected misconduct, in which case COPE recommendations are followed.

Submissions are also confidential for reviewers, who are not permitted to share or distribute any part of the manuscripts they receive for evaluation. Peer-reviewing is handled according to the Ethical Guidelines for Peer Reviewers by the COPE.

In cases of suspected misconduct, reviewers are encouraged to contact the editorial office immediately and confidentially. They may also recommend a specific course of action in their confidential comments to the editor, in line with the COPE guidelines.

Akademik Gıda conducts a double-blind peer review process, i.e. the names of the reviewers are confidential to ensure the critical evaluation of the work. Reviewers are asked not to disclose their names or contact details in their comments for authors.

Authorship

According to the COPE, “authorship can refer to individuals or groups that create an idea or develop the publication that disseminates that intellectual or creative work”. Based on this definition, an author is an individual who has made a substantial contribution to the conception or design of the research; the acquisition, analysis, or interpretation of data; and who has been involved in drafting or critically revising the manuscript for important intellectual content. Contributors who do not meet these criteria should be acknowledged in the Acknowledgements section and should not be listed as authors.

The correct and full names of all authors, along with their ORCID iDs, must appear on the title page of the manuscript. Author names must be accompanied by their affiliations, and the title page must include the full contact details of the corresponding author. The corresponding author’s valid postal address, telephone number, fax number (if applicable), and email address should be stated on the first page of the manuscript.

All authors must affirm that the manuscript is original, has not been published previously, and is not under consideration elsewhere prior to the editorial board’s final decision.

Funding Sources

Details of all funding sources for the research should be stated in the Acknowledgements. Authors must provide the full official name(s) of the funding agency or agencies and the corresponding grant number(s).

Pre-publication Corrections

Alterations in authorship after submission to Akademik Gıda must be justified only by additional work required during the revision process. No changes are permitted after the manuscript has been accepted for publication. Any authorship change must be clearly indicated in the responses to reviewers and must be agreed upon by all authors. The corresponding author is primarily responsible for any alterations in the revised version of the manuscript, including changes to the author order. Any dispute regarding authorship will be handled according to the guidelines of the COPE: “How to handle authorship disputes: a guide for new researchers”.

Akademik Gıda promises ethical and transparent scholarly publishing recommended by the COPE (the Principles of Transparency and Best Practice in Scholarly Publishing). All authors are responsible for the accuracy of the published data. For any correction in a publication, the corresponding author will receive the galley proof and is required to review and carefully correct it within 4 days prior to publication.

Post-publication Corrections

Post-publication corrections include all changes after publication, including errata, corrigenda, expressions of concern, and retractions. An erratum is a publisher-initiated notice that corrects production or editorial errors introduced during typesetting or publication, which do not alter the study’s conclusions. A corrigendum is an author-initiated correction addressing mistakes made by the authors that, while important for accuracy, do not invalidate the main findings. A retraction is a formal notice indicating that an article is unreliable due to significant errors, methodological flaws, ethical concerns, or research misconduct. Where appropriate, Akademik Gıda may issue an expression of concern to alert readers to potential issues while an investigation is ongoing.

Requests for post-publication corrections may be submitted by authors, readers, editors, peer reviewers, or institutional representatives. Each request should clearly describe the issue, provide supporting evidence or documentation, and propose an appropriate solution when possible. The journal encourages proactive, good-faith reporting of errors to safeguard the integrity of the scholarly record and to ensure that readers have access to accurate information.

To request a correction, submit an email to the journal at the Editorial Office at ogursoy@yahoo.com including the article title, DOI, and a concise explanation of the dispute. The editorial office will acknowledge receipt and conduct an initial assessment to determine whether the issue warrants an erratum, corrigendum, expression of concern, or retraction. As needed, the journal may consult independent experts, the original reviewers, or relevant institutional bodies. Decisions are guided by the severity and impact of the issue and follow recognized best practices, including COPE recommendations.

All corrections are published as citable notices that are permanently linked both to and from the original article. Each notice includes the date of publication, the reason for the change, and a clear description of what has been corrected. The online article will display a visible “Corrected on [date]” banner and a change history, ensuring that readers can easily see the nature and timing of updates. Version control is maintained to preserve the integrity and traceability of the scholarly record.

Minor factual or typographical errors that do not affect the interpretation of results are typically processed on a rolling basis as soon as they are verified. Substantive corrections that require investigation, consultation, or reanalysis will be prioritized and completed as promptly as possible. The journal will keep authors informed of progress and expected timelines throughout the process.

Authors are obligated to promptly notify the journal upon discovering any error in their published work and to provide relevant data or documentation to facilitate evaluation. They must cooperate fully with editorial inquiries and, where necessary, with institutional investigations. When a correction is warranted, authors are expected to review and approve the proposed notice for accuracy. Failure to cooperate may lead to an expression of concern or, in serious cases, a retraction.

Retraction is a way to correct the scholarly record and alert readers to articles with serious flaws or errors in content or data, making their findings and conclusions unreliable. When a retraction should be considered, authors may retract their article and must follow the Retraction Guidelines of the COPE. Retraction notices will clearly state the reasons for retraction, such as unreliable data, major analytical errors, redundant publication, plagiarism, or image manipulation, and will indicate whether the authors agree with the decision. Retracted articles remain accessible but are clearly watermarked or labeled to indicate their status, preserving the record while preventing misuse. When concerns are substantial but investigations are ongoing or inconclusive, the journal may issue an expression of concern to alert readers to potential issues pending further information.

All correction notices, expressions of concern, and retractions are assigned DOIs where applicable and are indexed in relevant bibliographic databases to ensure discoverability. Links between the original article and associated notices are bidirectional and permanent. This approach supports transparency, enables accurate citation, and maintains the continuity and integrity of the scientific record across platforms.

Ethical Considerations

Conflict of interest:

Authors must declare any conflicts of interest in the submission form. Authors are also requested to suggest at least three potential reviewers before submission, and these reviewers must not be colleagues, collaborators, or members of the authors’ institutions. All peer reviewers should follow the Ethical Guidelines for Peer Reviewers of the COPE during their peer review process.

Reviewers should inform the editors of any conflicts of interest that would prevent them from reviewing a paper and are advised to follow COPE guidelines (Ethics toolkit for a successful editorial office).

For manuscripts submitted by members of the Editorial Board or their collaborators, the peer-review process is modified to exclude them from all stages of evaluation to minimize bias.

During the review and revision processes, the editors of Akademik Gıda follow the COPE guidelines (Principles of Transparency and Best Practice in Scholarly Publishing).

Research involving human subjects, animals or plants

If the research involves humans or animals, authors are recommended to follow the guidelines of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE).

For studies involving human participants, informed consent must be obtained and documented by the authors. For participants under the age of 18, consent must be provided by a parent or legal guardian. For ethical considerations and the protection of individual identities, proper consent forms must be available if requested for the submissions of case reports, following the COPE guidelines (Ensuring consent for publishing medical case reports).

For all tested subjects, the manuscript must include a statement detailing compliance with relevant guidelines and any required permissions or licenses.

Any research involving animals must comply with institutional, national, or international guidelines and, where applicable, should be approved by an ethics committee.

Any experimental research on plants, including the collection of plant materials, must comply with institutional, national, or international guidelines.

Field studies must be conducted in compliance with local legislation, and the manuscript should include a statement specifying the appropriate permissions and/or licenses.

Publication misconduct:

Akademik Gıda follows the guidelines of the COPE: Principles of Transparency and Best Practice in Scholarly Publishing.

In cases of suspected misconduct (such as redundant or duplicate submission, plagiarism, text recycling, violations of ethical norms or other reasons stated in the Retraction Guidelines of the COPE) researchers, reviewers, or readers are highly encouraged to contact the Editorial Office at ogursoy@yahoo.com.

Textual overlap in manuscripts is strictly limited to a maximum of 25%, with no more than 10% originating from a single source. Manuscripts exceeding these thresholds are immediately rejected. If these terms are violated, the COPE recommendations will be followed and all parties involved will be notified.

Artificial intelligence tools or technologies:

Authors may use artificial intelligence (“AI Technology”) when preparing manuscripts for Akademik Gıda. The journal welcomes the thoughtful, transparent, and responsible use of AI to support high editorial standards and protect intellectual property and other rights. Authors remain fully accountable for their submissions, published articles, and any tools or sources used. Akademik Gıda recognizes AI’s growing role in research and writing, and the latest version of the STM general guidance in scholarly publishing on the role of generative AI is highly recommended to authors.
