Assessment of Water Quality Using Water Quality Index (WQI) and Statistical Methods in Camlipinar Pond (Duzce, Türkiye)
Abstract
This study aims to determine the water quality and irrigation suitability of the Camlipinar Pond, which is located in the Kaynasli District of Duzce Province. Between March 2023 and February 2024, water samples were collected monthly from three stations. A total of 28 parameters were analyzed from these samples. The WQI, SAR, %Na, MH, KR, and RSC values were calculated on the basis of the obtained data. The results were evaluated in line with the WHO’s (2011) drinking water standards and the Surface Water Quality Regulation of Türkiye (SWQR, 2016). Given the WQI results, the pond water was classified as excellent quality. Although it fell into the unsuitable class in terms of MH for irrigation purposes, it was classified as excellent on the basis of the SAR, good on the basis of the %Na and RSC, and suitable on the basis of the KR. Continued monitoring is recommended to ensure sustainable use and detect any future changes in water quality. In addition, further investigations focusing on seasonal dynamics, nutrient enrichment, and potential heavy metal accumulation would provide a more comprehensive understanding of long-term water quality trends. Considering the increasing pressures of climate change and intensive agricultural practices, proactive management strategies should be developed to maintain both the ecological balance of the pond and its suitability as a sustainable irrigation resource.
