Attitudes toward Artificial Intelligence among University Students: The Role of Personality Traits

Abstract

The rapid integration of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies into many aspects of daily life has increased the importance of examining the psychological factors that shape individuals’ attitudes toward these technologies. The purpose of this study was to investigate university students’ general attitudes toward AI in relation to their personality traits. The study was conducted with data collected from 554 university students enrolled at a public university. Data were gathered using the Basic Personality Traits Inventory and the General Attitudes toward Artificial Intelligence Scale (GAAIS). The findings indicated that agreeableness and openness to experience significantly and positively predicted positive attitudes toward AI. Agreeableness also significantly and negatively predicted negative attitudes, which suggested a bidirectional relationship between agreeableness and attitudes toward AI. In addition, extraversion was found to be associated with more tolerant attitudes toward the negative aspects of AI, whereas conscientiousness, negative valence, and neuroticism were not identified as significant predictors of attitudes toward AI. Overall, the findings emphasize the role of personality traits in shaping attitudes toward artificial intelligence.
