The Effect of Coding Activities on Primary School Students’ Self-Efficacy and Attitude Towards Mathematics

Abstract

Abstract The current state of technology highlights not only the importance of being individuals who use technology, which occupies a significant place in our daily lives, but also the necessity of becoming individuals who contribute to this progress through various software and digital tools. While coding education has found a place within middle school information technology courses in Turkey, it has been observed that there is no structured process that enables primary school students to acquire coding skills. The purpose of study is to examine the effect of coding activities conducted with fourth-grade primary school students on their attitudes towards mathematics. For this purpose, a single-group pre-test post-test design was employed in the study, and coding practices lasting 24 hours were carried out with 32 fourth-grade primary school students. The results revealed a significant and positive difference between the pre-test and post-test scores of students’ attitudes towards mathematics, as well as a significant and visible increase in their Scratch self-efficacy perceptions. In the rapidly developing world of technology, it is considered important to provide such skills from early ages, both to contribute to the development of 21st-century competencies in students and to prepare them for professional life at an early stage.
