Science Teachers' Views on the Development of Instructional Designs for STREAM Approach in the Context of Sustainable Development Goals

Abstract

This study aims to determine science teachers’ views on developing an instructional design for the STREAM (Science, Technology, Reading Comprehension, Arts, and Mathematics) approach within the scope of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The research employed a basic interpretive qualitative design with 27 science teachers selected through convenience sampling. Data were collected using the “Science Teachers' Opinion Form” and analyzed through content analysis in MAXQDA software. To ensure validity and reliability, measures such as participant confirmation, third-party expert examination, and direct quotations were implemented. Analysis of the findings revealed four themes in teachers' views on sustainable development: “definition of sustainable development”, “sustainable development goals”, “sustainable resource use”, and “importance of sustainable development goals”. Teachers' perspectives on the STREAM approach were categorized into themes including "interdisciplinary approach," "extended STEM/STEAM approach," "transdisciplinary approach," and "skills." When examining the relationship between SDGs and STREAM, themes of “integration in the educational environment,” “awareness,” and “projects and applications” emerged. Regarding the development of a STREAM-based instructional design within the SDG framework, themes of “points to be considered,” “model, topics, disciplines, and skills,” and “contributions and difficulties” were identified. The study highlights science teachers’ emphasis on sustainability awareness, underscoring the need to integrate SDGs into education. Results indicate a positive teacher outlook on combining SDGs with the STREAM approach, suggesting potential benefits for students’ multidimensional development. Teachers' insights on integrating STREAM into science lessons offer valuable perspectives for enhancing learning experiences and fostering holistic student growth. The study recommends revising teacher education programs to provide more comprehensive training on sustainability and STREAM approaches.
