Investigation of the Relationship Between Compassion Levels and Attachment Styles of Multicultural International Students Staying in Boarding School

Öz

Introduction: As people progress from infancy to adulthood, they establish different relationships depending on their attachment patterns. Compassion is expressed as an important emotion in the
execution of these relationships.
Objective: This descriptive correlational study was conducted to examine the relationship between compassion levels and attachment styles of multicultural international boarding school students.
Materials and Method: The sample of this descriptive and correlational study consisted of 259 multicultural international boarding students in a high school in Turkey. Personal information form,
compassion scale and three-dimensional attachment styles scale were used as data collection tools; data were analyzed with frequency, percentage distribution, Spearman correlation, Mann-Whitney U test and Kruskal-Wallis test in SPSS 22.0 program.
Findings: According to the research findings, the subscale scores on the Attachment Styles Scale were 3.85 ± 0.62 for secure attachment, 2.10 ± 0.67 for avoidant attachment, and 2.64 ± 0.68 for anxiousambivalent attachment, while the mean score on the compassion scale was determined to be 94.69 ± 12.37. A moderate positive correlation was found between compassion and secure attachment (r = .561, p < .001), (r = 0.561; p<0.05), a negative and moderately significant relationship with avoidant attachment (r=−0.562; p<0.05), and a negative and moderately significant relationship with anxiousambivalent attachment (r=−0.429; p<0.05).
Discussion and Conclusion: In the study, it was determined that the secure and anxious-ambivalent attachment levels of the students were at the medium level, while their avoidant attachment levels were below the medium level, and their compassion levels were above the medium level. The findings show that there is a positive relationship between compassion level and secure attachment, and a negative relationship between anxious-ambivalent and avoidant attachment. Accordingly, it is recommended to organize trainings to develop healthy attachment styles in adolescents.
