From Growth to Well-Being: Long-Run Determinants of Human Development in EAGLES Countries

Öz

This study examines the economic and socio-economic determinants of human development in EAGLES countries over the period 1990-2023. In the analysis, the Human Development Index (HDI) is used as the dependent variable, with income per capita (INC), import growth, unemployment, and life expectancy as explanatory variables. The empirical strategy begins with testing for cross-sectional dependence and slope heterogeneity in the panel dataset, followed by an examination of the long-run relationship among the variables using the Westerlund (2007) cointegration test. Long-run coefficients are then estimated through the Augmented Mean Group (AMG) estimator. The findings show that EG, import growth, and life expectancy have a positive, statistically significant effect on human development. The unemployment result is particularly noteworthy, as it points to a positive association in EAGLES countries, contrary to the predominantly negative relationship reported in much of the existing literature. This finding should be interpreted in light of labor market structures, the nature of unemployment, and country-specific socio-economic conditions. Overall, the results suggest that human development is shaped not only by economic performance but also by health-related conditions and labor market dynamics, highlighting its inherently multidimensional character. In this respect, the study offers policy-relevant insights for sustaining human development gains across EAGLES countries.
