Ground Improvement Methods in Constructions of Wastewater Treatment Plant in Türkiye

Öz

Soil conditions play a decisive role in ensuring the safe and sustainable operation of wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). This study examines common soil problems encountered at treatment plant sites, including; insufficient bearing capacity and liquefaction risk in loose sand and silt layers, consolidation settlements in soft clay soils, differential settlements due to heterogeneity in uncontrolled fills, and the effects of high groundwater levels on excavation and structural stability are evaluated. Furthermore, various soil improvement techniques such as dynamic compaction, vibro-compaction, jet grouting, stone columns, deep mixing, and preloading-drainage methods, are compared in terms of their applicability, advantages, and limitations. The findings indicate that the selection of an appropriate improvement method depends not only on soil parameters but also on project duration, cost, environmental conditions, and the functional requirements of the plant.
