The role of multimedia in enhancing teaching and learning: A systematic review of cognitive, motivational, and skill-based outcomes

Öz

The main purpose of this research is to examine the role of educational multimedia in improving the teaching and learning process. The study specifically aims to highlight the principles, key features, and major advantages of integrating multimedia technologies into formal education systems in order to enhance students’ learning outcomes. The application of innovative teaching methods, particularly those that involve multimedia tools such as audio, video, animations, and interactive digital resources, can contribute significantly to achieving higher educational goals. Multimedia integration enhances learners’ engagement, increases motivation, supports different learning styles, and improves comprehension and retention of knowledge. The impact of modern educational tools on students’ academic performance and learning efficiency is widely recognized, as multimedia-based instruction provides opportunities for active learning and meaningful interaction with educational content. Moreover, the use of current multimedia technologies in the teaching process can be considered a strategic approach for strengthening formal education systems in any country. It supports teachers in delivering lessons more effectively and helps students develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills. However, despite its benefits, many educational systems still face serious limitations and deficiencies that require immediate attention. One major challenge is the lack of adequate infrastructure and essential facilities in schools, including insufficient hardware and educational communication tools such as computers, projectors, and stable internet access. These shortages can create significant barriers to effective learning and prevent students from fully benefiting from multimedia-supported instruction. Therefore, principles, features and advantages of multimedia in the teaching process are examined in the present study.
