Primary School Students’ Attitudes toward Plants

Öz

The purpose of this study was to investigate primary school students’ attitudes toward plants. Plan Attitude Questionnaire which was adapted by researchers into Turkish was utilized to collect data. The questionnaire was administered to a group of 777 primary sixth, seventh, and eighth students. Results obtained from the study revealed that students had higher attitudes for importance dimension of the questionnaire, while they had lower attitudes for urban trees dimension. It was found that, between gender and attitudes, while there was a significant difference for importance and interest dimensions, there was no any significant difference for urban trees and utilization dimensions. It was also found that girls’ attitude scores were higher than those of boys. Results also revealed that seventh grade students had higher attitude scores than sixth and eighth grade. In light of findings obtained, educational implications for using plants in science teaching are made.

İlköğretim Öğrencilerinin Bitkilere Yönelik Tutumları

Öz

Bu çalışmanın amacı ilköğretim öğrencilerinin bitkilere yönelik tutumlarını incelemektir. Araştırmada veri toplamak amacıyla araştırmacılar tarafından Türkçeye uyarlanan Bitki Tutum Anketi kullanılmıştır. Anket 777 ilköğretim altıncı, yedinci ve sekizinci sınıf öğrencisine uygulanmıştır. Elde edilen analiz sonuçları öğrencilerin bitki tutum anketinin önem boyutuna yüksek tutumlar gösterirlerken, en düşük tutumlar ise şehir ağaçları boyutu için gösterildiğini ortaya çıkarmıştır. Cinsiyet ile tutumlar arasında önem ve ilgi boyutlarında anlamlı bir fark bulunurken (p.05) tespit edilmiştir. Fark olan boyutlarda kız öğrencilerin puanları yüksek bulunmuştur. Sonuçlar aynı zamanda, yedinci sınıf öğrencilerinin tutum puanlarının altıncı ve sekizinci sınıf öğrencilerine göre daha yüksek tutum puanlarına sahip oldukları bulunmuştur. Sonuçlar ayrıca kızların bitkilere karşı erkeklere oranla daha olumlu tutuma sahip olduklarını göstermiştir. Elde edilen bulgular ışığında, bitkilerin fen öğretiminde kullanılmasına yönelik önerilerde bulunulmuştur.
