Bio

Dr Alper Kumcu is a researcher at the Department of Translation and Interpreting, Hacettepe University, Turkey. He completed an MA in the same department, investigating eye movements during simultaneous interpreting with text. After receiving his MSc with distinction from the School of Psychology at the University of Birmingham, he completed his PhD at the same department under the supervision of Dr Robin L. Thompson, investigating the role of space and spatial perception in verbal memory with his thesis entitled "Looking for language in space: spatial simulations in memory for language".

Dr Alper Kumcu is currently the Co-Editor of Translation, Cognition & Behaviour, published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. Previously, he was an Associate Editor of the Hacettepe University Journal of the Faculty of Letters. He acts as a referee for several international journals including Cognition, Psychological Research, Memory, and The Interpreter and Translator Trainer, as well as for grants from the Turkish Scientific and Technological Research Council (TÜBİTAK). He received the Science Incentive Award in Social Sciences from Hacettepe University in 2020.

His main areas of research are memory for language and embodied cognition within psycholinguistics and data-driven cognitive translation studies. He has extensive experience in experimental research design (behavioural and eye-tracking), programming (Phyton), statistical analysis (R, mixed-effects modelling) and data visualisation (ggplot2).
