Bio

Dr. Zameer Careem (b. Nov, 1992) is a medical doctor-historian, a guest lecturer at local and foreign universities, an ethnologist, a published author, a freelance journalist, and a television broadcaster. Additionally, he serves as a board director at the Centre for Policy Alternatives (CPA). Dr. Careem has achieved notable firsts, becoming the first Sri Lankan recipient of the KATIP scholarship in Türkiye, and the first scholar to secure the ICRO research fellowship in Iran. Dr. Careem holds an MPhil Degree in history from the University of Colombo. Dr. Careem, an accomplished author with a literary repertoire spanning five books, has recently unveiled his magnum opus, "From Europa to Taprobana." This masterful work offers a profound exploration of the historical bonds between Sri Lanka and Central and Southeast Europe, receiving the distinguished honor of publication by the Embassy and Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka in Austria. Remarkably, the current President of Sri Lanka contributed the foreword to his second opus, 'Persaudaraan: Malay Life in Sri Lanka' (2017), a work that has garnered recognition and citations among esteemed academics. Dr. Careem's literary legacy has transcended borders, with his books gracing the shelves of prestigious institutions such as Stanford University, the University of Chicago, the New York Public Library, the National Libraries of Australia, Singapore, and Sri Lanka. Moreover, his contributions are preserved for posterity within the hallowed halls of the National Archives of Indonesia. Dr. Careem has graced conferences and seminars as a distinguished guest speaker at universities and research centers in countries including Sri Lanka, India, Indonesia, the Czech Republic, Iran, Afghanistan, and Türkiye. Notably, in September 2023, he assumed the role of chairperson at the ICSSR sponsored International Conference on Museum Spaces at the University of Rajasthan, representing Sri Lanka. His international presence extends to the representation of Sri Lanka at the TWMCC (World Muslim Communities Council) summit in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, in 2019. In 2012, his commemorative poem in honor of HM Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee was recited during the Jubilee service at St Mary's Church in the United Kingdom, marking a poignant moment of recognition.
