Structural Transformation of Agricultural Employment in Türkiye: Gender, Informality, Income Disparities, and Demographic Aging

Abstract

This study examines the structural transformation of agricultural employment in Türkiye in terms of sectoral employment shifts, employment status, informality, income disparities, labor productivity, demographic aging, and gender differences. The analysis draws on secondary data from the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), with 2005–2025 serving as the main reference period. The findings show that agriculture’s share of total employment declined from 25.5% in 2005 to 14.0% in 2025, alongside a continuing shift of employment toward the service sector. Agricultural employment remains dominated by self-employed workers (45.02%) and unpaid family workers (40.90%), while wage and salary earners account for only 10.64%. Informal employment also remains exceptionally high at 81.91%. Gender disparities are particularly pronounced: in 2025, 72.6% of women employed in agriculture were unpaid family workers and 91.9% were informally employed. Nevertheless, the share of self-employed women increased from 9.4% in 2020 to 15.0% in 2025. Although agricultural incomes continue to lag behind those in other sectors, real agricultural value added per worker rose by 58.3%, from approximately US$9.0 thousand in 2005 to US$14.3 thousand in 2024. Demographic indicators point to a marked aging of the agricultural workforce: between 2000 and 2023, the share of workers aged 15–24 fell from 22.78% to 12.89%, while the share of those aged 55 and over increased from 21.02% to 35.22%. Overall, the findings indicate that despite the declining quantitative importance of agricultural employment, structural challenges related to informality, gender disparities, income gaps, and workforce aging persist.
