A Review of Henri Fayol and His Contributions to Management

Abstract

In this study, Henri
Fayol’s life, contribution to management science, characteristics of Management
Process Approach, comparison with Taylor and Mintzberg, experimental approach
to management, and contribution to the creation of modern management techniques
are studied depending on his book “General and Administrative Management” which
was published first at the beginning of the 20th century. Of course as the
father of "Management Process Approach", Fayol’s life, lifestyle,
educational background, and the era in which he lived have effects on his
groundbreaking findings in management area. In this study, besides contribution
of Fayol to the management field, valuable impacts of his management approaches
and principles on the creation of modern management approaches are handled from
different perspectives. Instead of criticizing Fayol with biases and
stereotypes like everyone else, comparisons are made with the approaches of
contemporary organizational theorists and the ideas leading to the emergence of
these approaches and the equivalence of Fayol's approaches in contemporary
management are tried to be revealed. Therefore, it is aimed to provide
researchers and practitioners with the opportunity to analyze contemporary
management approaches with a richer perspective under the leadership of Fayol.
In this context, a comprehensive literature review is conducted and the
findings from this review are presented under different titles in the paper.

Henri Fayol ve Yönetim Alanına Katkıları Üzerine Bir İnceleme

Abstract

Bu çalışmada Henri Fayol’un 20. yüzyılın başlarında yayımlamış olduğu “Genel ve Endüstriyel Yönetim” adlı kitabından hareketle Fayol’un hayatı, yönetim bilimine katkıları, ortaya çıkardığı Yönetim Süreci Yaklaşımının özellikleri, Taylor ve Mintzberg ile karşılaştırılması, yönetime deneysel yaklaşımı ve modern yönetim tekniklerinin oluşmasına katkılarına yer verilmiştir. Yönetim Süreci Yaklaşımının fikir babası olarak kabul edilen Fayol’un hayatı, yaşam tarzı, aldığı eğitimlerin ve yaşadığı dönemin kuşkusuz yönetim alanında çığır açan bulguları üzerinde önemli katkıları bulunmaktadır. Bu çalışmada Fayol’un yönetim alanına katkılarının yanı sıra yönetimle ilgili ortaya attığı fikirlerin ve ilkelerin modern yönetime katkıları da farklı bakış açılarından ele alınmıştır. Fayol’u herkes gibi önyargılarla ve genel kanılarla eleştirmek yerine modern teorisyenlerin yaklaşımlarıyla karşılaştırmalar yapılarak bu yaklaşımların ortaya çıkmasına öncülük eden fikirleri ve Fayol’un yaklaşımlarının çağdaş yönetimdeki karşılığı açığa çıkarılmaya çalışılmıştır. Dolayısıyla araştırmacılara ve uygulamacılara modern yönetim yaklaşımlarını Fayol’un önderliğinde daha zengin bir bakış açısıyla analiz etme fırsatı sunmak amaçlanmıştır. Bu bağlamda kapsamlı bir literatür taraması yapılarak çalışma sonucu bulunan bulgular makale içerisinde çeşitli başlıklarda sunulmuştur.
