Reassessing The Mosque-on-Monastery Hypothesis: The Case of Sultan Murad Mosque in Skopje, North Macedonia

Abstract

This paper examines the long-standing claim that the Sultan Murad Mosque in Skopje was built on the site of a medieval Orthodox monastery dedicated to St. George (Gorgos). It situates the debate within broader processes of erasure, neglect, and reinterpretation of Ottoman heritage. A critical review of medieval charters, historiography, and modern accounts identifies three proposed locations: the Butel cemetery, a hillock in the Tophane Plain, and the mosque site itself. It demonstrates that all three rely on ambiguous descriptions, alleged local testimonies, and later speculative interpretations, while lacking firm evidentiary support. Recent conservation works at the mosque and its courtyard have revealed no architectural or stratigraphic traces of an earlier ecclesiastical structure. The study shows how weakly substantiated assumptions and selective reinterpretations have been perpetuated in scholarship, guidebooks, and popular narratives, where the “mosque-on-monastery” hypothesis is strategically mobilized within nationalist identity politics and heritage discourses, thus shaping misleading public perceptions of Skopje’s past.

Manastır Üzerine Cami Hipotezinin Yeniden Değerlendirilmesi: Kuzey Makedonya Üsküp'teki Sultan Murad Camii Örneği

Abstract

Bu makale, Üsküp’teki Sultan Murad Camii’nin Orta Çağ’da Aziz George'a (Gorgos) adanmış bir Ortodoks manastırının bulunduğu yere inşa edildiği yönündeki uzun süredir devam eden iddiayı incelemektedir. Çalışma, söz konusu tartışmayı Osmanlı mirasının silinmesi, ihmal edilmesi ve yeniden yorumlanması süreçleri bağlamında ele almaktadır. Ortaçağ beratları, tarih yazımı ve modern dönem anlatıları üzerine yapılan eleştirel değerlendirme, manastır için önerilen üç farklı konumu ortaya koymaktadır: Butel Mezarlığı, Tophane Ovası’ndaki bir tepecik ve caminin mevcut konumu. İnceleme, bu üç önerinin de muğlak betimlemelere, yerel tanıklık iddialarına ve sonraki dönemlere ait spekülatif yorumlara dayandığını; buna karşılık sağlam ve doğrudan kanıtlardan yoksun olduğunu göstermektedir. Cami ve avlusunda yakın zamanda yapılan restorasyon çalışmaları sırasında, daha erken tarihli bir kilise yapısına ait herhangi bir mimari ya da stratigrafik iz tespit edilmemiştir. Çalışma, zayıf temellere dayanan varsayımların ve seçici yeniden yorumların akademik literatürde, rehber kitaplarda ve popüler anlatılarda nasıl sürdürüldüğünü ortaya koymaktadır. “Manastır üzerine cami” hipotezinin milliyetçi kimlik politikaları ve miras söylemlerinde stratejik bir araç olarak kullanıldığı ve bu yolla Üsküp’ün geçmişine dair yanıltıcı kamusal algıların nasıl şekillendiğini göstermektedir.
