Habitat Use of Large Mammals in Relation to Stand Types in Artvin–Meydancik Forests

Abstract

This study evaluated habitat use patterns of large mammal species in relation to forest stand types in the Artvin–Meydancık Forest of northeastern Türkiye. Three large mammal species were recorded during the study: the brown bear (Ursus arctos), wild boar (Sus scrofa), and Anatolian chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra). Sampling points were classified into five habitat types (deciduous forest, coniferous forest, coniferous forest–opening edge, deciduous forest–opening edge, and forest openings). Data were collected across multiple seasons using camera trapping and field observations at 44 sampling points representing different habitat elements, including point count surveys at 24 locations and camera trap monitoring at 20 sites. The camera trap survey encompassed a total of 2454 trap days. The Relative Habitat Use Index was used to assess the habitat preference rates of wild animals. According to the camera-trap data, brown bears were most frequently recorded in deciduous forests (26.66%), whereas wild boars were most frequently recorded in coniferous forest–opening edge habitats (35.04%). Based on point count surveys, brown bears were again most frequently recorded in deciduous forests (34.39%), while Anatolian chamois were mainly recorded in forest openings (59.46%). In addition, degraded oak forests and forest-opening edge habitats were among the habitat elements used by large mammal species in the study area.
