Habitat Use of Large Mammals in Relation to Stand Types and Elevation Gradient in Artvin–Meydancik Forests

Öz

This study examined the relationship between habitat use by large mammal species and forest stand types in the Artvin–Meydancık Forest of northeastern Türkiye. Three large mammal species were recorded during the study: the brown bear (Ursus arctos), wild boar (Sus scrofa), and Anatolian chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra asiatica). Sampling points were classified into five habitat types (deciduous forest, coniferous forest, coniferous forest–clearing edge, deciduous forest–clearing edge, and forest clearings) and stratified across four elevation bands (<1000 m, 1000–1500 m, 1500–2000 m, and >2000 m). Data were collected across multiple seasons using camera trapping and field observations at 45 sampling points representing different habitat elements, including point count surveys at 24 locations and camera trap monitoring at 21 sites. The camera trap survey encompassed a total of 2.520 trap days. Statistical analyses revealed no significant association between habitat use and either habitat type or elevation class. Nevertheless, descriptive patterns showed that brown bears and wild boars were more frequently recorded in deciduous forest stands, accounting for 47% and 56% of observations, respectively, whereas the Anatolian chamois was predominantly observed in alpine meadow habitats (60%). In addition, degraded oak forests and forest-clearing edge habitats were among the most frequently used habitat elements, and habitat use tended to be higher in structurally heterogeneous stands characterized by greater horizontal and vertical complexity.
