Ethical Principles and Publication Policy
The Turkish Journal of Middle Eastern Studies (TJMES) prioritizes universal ethical standars in the pursuit of honest academic scholarship, and adheres to the standards of the Committee of Publication Ethics (COPE; see https://publicationethics.org/).
Committed to free and open accessibility of intellectual work, TJMES does not impose publication fees, and both editors and referees contribute to the production of the journal in honorary capacity.
In line with its aim to dedicate a platform to the extensive study of the Middle East region, TJMES stands for an unbiased publication policy welcoming work from across the social science world regardless of the author’s gender, nationality/race, religion/ideology/political stance, institutional or academic position. Thus, meeting scientific and academic standards is the only criteria for a submission to qualify for publication. All editorial processes and decisions prior to publication are conducted in compliance with the principle of confidentiality. In case of plagiarism or unqualified submissions, only the author(s) will be contacted and informed about the editorial rejection. No other information on the author(s) or their submitted manuscripts will be passed through to others.
TJMES applies double-blind review, and consults - if necessary - a third referee. The pool of referees consists of highly qualified and experienced academics with a research focus in Middle Eastern studies. Our referees are explicitly instructed to examine submissions qualified for review under the principle of respecting freedom of opinion, intellectual property rights, and the confidentiality of submitted work.
Authors, who are interested in publishing with TJMES, are required to account for the originality of their work along with applying the correct citation and publication format. As it is general custom in publishing, manuscripts submitted to TJMES should not be submitted elsewhere. In case of multiple submissions, the evaluation process will be canceled, and TJMES will have the right to ban the author(s) for a certain period of time. Rejected manuscripts are not to be resubmitted unless they have been changed profoundly, and thus can be considered as new submissions.
According to our publication schedule, authors receive feedback to their initial submissions within 4 months at most. After resubmission, a second round of feedback follows within 3 months. The duration from first submission until final publication takes at most a year, however, once the issue is completed, an early view at dergipark is possibly provided.
Author(s) whose research involves data collection in form of surveys, interviews, focus groups, and methods alike, have to make sure that their proceeding does not violate the protection of personal data in any way, and that they are granted permission from the institutional ethics committee to publish their findings. This inevitably includes the provision of an informed consent form filled and signed by individuals who participated in the research as well as permissions for used material that is subject to copyright. Views expressed within published work belong to the authors only.
No part of the journal’s published work may be reproduced, stored or introduced to a retrieval system or transmitted in any form, or by any means, electronic, mechanical, photocopying, recording, or otherwise, without prior written consent of TJMES editors.
