In this study, the
aims were to determine the nutritional status of educable mentally retarded children
by using their food consumption records and to determine the deficiencies or
redundancies in the intake of basic nutrients. All foods consumed by educable
mentally retarded 45 students for 3 days were recorded in their food consumption
forms. Full and accurate 32 records were assessed. Quantities of energy,
protein, vitamins, minerals consumed by each child were calculated. The intake
of nutrients was assessed by the age and gender of children. 43.8% of the
children had problems with nutrition, and 28.1% of the children had missed their
meal. 90.6% of the children consumed snacks except in their main meals, and children
received 1004±435 kcal more energy than the average energy needed per day. In
mentally retarded children, particularly sugary food consumption can lead to
inability to meet the elements required for healthy growth and development, and
to excessive weakness or obesity. An approach should be provided according to
individual characteristics in the solution of nutritional problems of children
with mental retardation.
