The Beginnings Of Formal Music Education In The Balkans: A Comparative Analysis

Öz

This paper provides a comparative analysis of the beginnings of formal music education in nine Balkan countries: Serbia, Bulgaria, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Greece, Turkey, North Macedonia, Montenegro, and Albania. The aim is to establish the chronology of the founding of key music education institutions at three levels - lower or elementary, secondary, and higher education - and to identify common patterns and national specificities in their development. The study employs the comparative historiographical method, with data collected through document analysis of primary and secondary sources in several languages. The findings show that formal music education in the Balkans developed unevenly. Croatia represents the earliest example of institutionalised music education; Greece, Serbia, and Bulgaria developed their key institutions in the second half of the nineteenth and early twentieth century; while Bosnia and Herzegovina, Turkey, North Macedonia, Montenegro, and Albania established their institutional foundations mainly during the interwar period and after the Second World War. The study concludes that music education in the Balkans developed through three institutional models: the conservatory model, a vertical system of separate educational levels, and transitional forms. The contribution of the paper is its first systematic comparative overview of this topic in a regional Balkan framework.
