Experiences of Students Enrolled in the Graduate Program of Curriculum and Instruction of ChatGPT Usage

Abstract

ChatGPT stands as a preeminent artificial intelligence tool with a global user base exceeding 100 million individuals, making it one of the most widely utilized applications in its domain. Alongside its widespread integration into educational settings, the platform has also begun to play a significant role in postgraduate academic processes. In this context, the present study thoroughly examined the experiences of students enrolled in the Graduate Program of Curriculum and Instruction (GPCI) regarding their use of ChatGPT. Interviews were conducted with 27 students actively using ChatGPT, identified through purposive sampling. Thematic analysis of the qualitative data yielded eight primary themes: usage purposes, strengths, weaknesses, contributions, challenges encountered in usage, recommendations for improvement, concerns about usage, and its future role in education. Findings revealed that students widely use ChatGPT for tasks such as planning and writing scientific research, paraphrasing texts, correcting language errors, obtaining information, and supporting educational activities. Students highlighted strengths including functionality, high-quality output, strong foreign-language performance, and adaptability. However, they also reported weaknesses such as limited capabilities, low validity and reliability in some outputs, insufficient feedback quality, and communication difficulties. Students expressed concerns about potential negative effects on information security and research-thinking skills. Additionally, they proposed improvements related to reliability, communication, security, content generation, and interface design. Based on these findings, recommendations for developers, educational policymakers, and researchers were presented.
