The in vivo Evaluation of Biochemical and Oxidative Stress Markers in Rats Exposed to the Benzofuran-Benzimidazole Hybrid Molecule

Öz

Hybrid molecules incorporating benzofuran and benzimidazole scaffolds have attracted considerable interest in medicinal chemistry thanks to their significant biological activity, favorable pharmacological profiles, and low cytotoxicity. These structural features make them promising candidates for treating oxidative stress-related pathologies. The present study used a rat model to investigate the in vivo effects of 1H-Benzimidazole-2-thiol and 2-[(1H-benzimidazol-2-yl)thio]-1-(benzofuran-2-yl) ethan-1-one hydrobromide on oxidative stress parameters and biochemical indices. The compound was administered at various doses, and its effects on oxidative damage, antioxidant defense mechanisms, and metabolic function were systematically assessed. After the final treatment, tissues from the blood, liver, and kidneys were harvested for biochemical evaluation. High-performance liquid chromatography was used to determine the concentrations of antioxidant vitamins, malondialdehyde, and reduced and oxidized glutathione in serum and tissue matrices. Additionally, glutathione peroxidase activity in erythrocytes was determined spectrophotometrically. The results showed that the compound enhances the antioxidant defense system by modulating critical redox biomarkers, indicating its potential as a bioactive compound with significant antioxidant properties.
