Mechanical, water absorption, and abrasion properties of concrete road applications: A case study at Hitit University

Abstract

This study evaluated the mechanical, water absorption, and abrasion performance of concrete road applications constructed using traditional ready-mix concrete at the Sungurlu Vocational School of Hitit University. In the examinations, the average values of compressive strength, tensile strength, modulus of elasticity and Poisson's ratio of concrete were calculated as 41.57±3.71 MPa, 4.16±0.32 MPa, 29.16±1.82 GPa and 0.21±0.02, respectively. The results of water absorption by weight ranged from 4.61 % to 5.44 %, with an average of 4.98 ± 0.25%. Abrasion resistance tests showed an average wear depth of 21 ± 0.96 mm. Overall, the findings indicate that the concrete used in this project provides sufficient strength for road construction, marking it as one of the pioneering applications in the region.
