Comparison of hydraulic design principles in road culvert applications: The case of the United Kingdom and Türkiye

Öz

Proper management of water is important in designing roads and networks, and well-designed culverts are necessary to avoid deterioration of roadways due to floods and water. This paper seeks to establish the various aspects that were considered during culvert construction and the varieties of practices between the United Kingdom (UK) and Türkiye. The study includes the examination of the principal design parameters of the culverts from the Turkish General Directorate of Highways and the CIRIA Culvert Design and Operation Manual applicable in the UK. Further, the study samples and critiques scholarly articles to set out and record the design and construction principles in each country. Through analysis of these specifications and practices, the study reveals similarities and differences in the two countries’ culvert design. In this case, the intention is to ensure that the findings clearly compare the design methodologies, offering views into the advantages and disadvantages of each method. The findings indicate that while both countries adopt similar hydraulic principles, UK standards apply more conservative safety margins compared to Türkiye.
