The effect of position and orientation on the dimensional stability of different geometric features in Selective Laser Sintering (SLS)

Öz

This research is carried out on the study of the stability of the geometry and dimensions of parts produced using Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) technology, with the use of flame-retardant PA11 polymer powder designed for compliance with security standards in the aerospace industry. Six different sample parts are created in order to determine dimensional discrepancies at various positions and orientations within the printing chamber. Thermal expansion and contraction behaviors were found to be highly anisotropic; dimensional deviations in the XY plane ranged from -6.0% to +4.4% depending on the build platform position, while regional errors along the Z-axis were limited to a maximum of -2.7%. For thin-walled structures (minimum 0.8 mm limit), the horizontal orientation (H_H) provided the lowest error rates, whereas vertical orientations completely eliminated the manufacturability of 1 mm diameter pin and hole geometries. Furthermore, it was determined that slot gaps could be successfully manufactured down to 0.4 mm in the right-front (RF) region, where optimal cooling occurs. The results contribute to the development of Design for Additive Manufacturing (DfAM) guidelines for functional and complex parts and provide reliable tolerance limits to help designers achieve high-precision additive manufacturing outcomes.
