Trends and Methodological Features of Engineering Design-Based Science Education Research in Turkey

Abstract

Purpose: It is essential to elevate the levels of awareness and consciousness among individuals within society to keep pace with the rapid changes and advancements in science and technology, such transformations can only be achieved through education and instruction. In today’s world, traditional teaching methods have been replaced by approaches which are better suited to contemporary conditions. Changes in our education programs are now evident through methods such as problem-based learning, inquiry-based learning, peer instruction, project-based learning, and STEM education. Recently, efforts have been made to integrate engineering design-based science education (EDBSE) within STEM education. Studies investigating this integration have shown that this approach has positive effects on teachers, prospective teachers, and students. The data for this research consists of 55 full-text scientific research articles on EDBSE published electronically in Turkey between 2015 and 2024. Method: In the study, document analysis-a qualitative research method-was conducted. Content analysis was employed to analyze the research data, and a publication classification form was used. Findings: The research findings indicated that EDBSE contributes positively to the personal, social, and academic development of students, prospective teachers, and teachers. Additionally, the findings revealed that teachers often feel technically inadequate in engineering design-based science education activities and face numerous challenges, such as time constraints. Conclusion: This study provides an important guide for future research and educational practices in the field by thoroughly examining the general trends, research objectives, engineering design processes, and challenges faced, distinguishing it from previous reviews in the EDBSE field. Based on these findings, recommendations have been made for future researchers in this field.
