A Psychodrama-Based Group Intervention with Probationers: A Mixed-Methods Study
Öz
This study aims to examine the changes in social problem-solving skills of adults under probation supervision following a partially structured psychodrama group intervention. The research was conducted at the Kırıkkale Probation Directorate in Kırıkkale, Türkiye. The study group consisted of 12 male probationers with active supervision plans. An explanatory sequential mixed methods design integrating a qualitative phase followed by a quantitative pre-test-post-test phase was used. Quantitative findings showed no statistically significant change in the sub-dimensions of the social problem-solving scale (p > 0.05). In contrast, qualitative findings revealed that participants experienced positive subjective changes in developing perspectives, evaluating the potential consequences of their behavior, regulating their behavior, and developing awareness of criminal behavior. Furthermore, participants frequently referred to family responsibilities, interpersonal relationships, and culturally shaped role expectations when evaluating their experiences. Within the framework of available national literature, this study, one of the first psychodrama-based interventions conducted within the probation system in Türkiye, points to the potential of structured experiential group interventions to contribute as a complementary component to evidence-based probation practices. The findings suggest that psychodrama-based action-oriented therapeutic approaches can be used to support psychosocial interventions in probation practices and provide an important foundation for larger-scale studies in this field.
