BEHAVIORAL BIASES OF INDIVIDUAL INVESTORS ACROSS DEMOGRAPHIC VARIABLES: EVIDENCE FROM KIRKLARELI

Öz

This research was conducted to empirically examine the psychological differences influencing the financial preferences and decision-making mechanisms of individual investors, which diverge from the rational assumptions of conventional finance theories. The sample of the study consists of 368 individual investors actively conducting financial transactions within the provincial borders of Kırklareli, selected through the convenience sampling method. Designed in accordance with quantitative research methodology, the study collected data using a structured questionnaire. Arithmetic mean, independent samples t-test, and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) were employed in the analysis of the collected data. The results indicated that age groups and portfolio review frequency did not significantly differentiate any of the behavioral bias dimensions. Gender significantly differentiated herding behavior, regret aversion, representativeness, and loss aversion, whereas no significant gender difference was observed in overconfidence. Education level significantly differentiated all five behavioral bias dimensions. After the Benjamini–Hochberg correction, investment experience significantly differentiated overconfidence, herding behavior, and representativeness, but not regret aversion or loss aversion. Marital status did not significantly differentiate any of the behavioral bias dimensions after the correction for multiple testing. Overall, the effects of demographic and experiential characteristics varied across behavioral bias dimensions rather than producing uniform differences across all biases.
