From plate to soil: Evaluating food waste through the bokashi method within a campus sustainability framework

This study examines the Bokashi method as a decentralized food-waste management practice within a university campus sustainability context. Based on a qualitative case study, it analyzes a 15-day pilot at İstanbul Ticaret University using observation, field notes, process documentation, and participant feedback. Findings indicate that the pilot failed to reach the intended fermentation outcome mainly due to excessive sawdust use, weak process standardization, and insufficient monitoring of moisture, sealing, and leachate formation. The study concludes that Bokashi can support circular campus practices when implemented through training, standardized protocols, and institutionally supported, context-sensitive design.
