The Evaluation of High School Students' Tendencies and Opinions Regarding E-Diseases

Abstract

Purpose: The primary aim of this study is to determine high school students’ tendencies toward digitally based e-disorders such as selfitis, cheesepodding, photolurking, FoMO (fear of missing out), and Facebook depression, as well as their levels of knowledge regarding these conditions. Method: A mixed-method research design was employed in the study. The sample consisted of 480 students enrolled in three different types of high schools (Anatolian, Vocational, and Imam Hatip high schools) located in the Çaldıran district of Van province. Maximum variation sampling was utilized to ensure the inclusion of diverse perspectives and conditions. Quantitative data were collected through the “E-Disorder Tendency Determination Questionnaire,” while qualitative data were obtained via a semi-structured interview form. Quantitative data were analyzed using SPSS 23, and qualitative data were analyzed using MAXQDA 24. Findings: The findings revealed that both female and male students attending Anatolian, Vocational, and Imam Hatip high schools exhibited low levels of tendency toward selfitis, cheesepodding, photolurking, FoMO (fear of missing out), and Facebook depression. Additionally, it was found that students possessed a low, yet existing, level of knowledge about these conditions. Conclusion: When the data are evaluated holistically, it can be concluded that high school students generally demonstrate low levels of tendency toward e-disorders; however, they possess a certain level of awareness regarding these conditions.
