The Relationship between Separation–Individuation and Perceived Paternal Attitudes among Young Adults in Turkey: A Family Context Perspective

Abstract

This study aimed to examine the relationship between perceived paternal attitudes and the separation–individuation process in young adults in Turkey, while also considering factors influencing fatherhood (parental relationship, maternal support in the father–child relationship, and the father’s relationship with his own father) as well as the potential role of maternal attitudes. The sample consisted of 755 participants (640 females and 115 males). Data were collected online using the Personal Information Form, the Father Presence Questionnaire, the Shortened Version of the Perceived Parenting Styles Questionnaire – Child Form, and the Parenting Styles Scale. Data were analyzed through correlation, multiple linear regression, and hierarchical regression analyses. The results revealed a negative correlation between pathological separation–individuation and positive maternal and paternal attitudes, a positive parental relationship, maternal support in the father–child relationship, and the father’s positive relationship with his own father. Conversely, a positive correlation was observed between pathological separation–individuation and negative maternal and paternal attitudes. Moreover, the parental relationship and negative paternal attitudes (rejection and strict control) emerged as significant predictors of pathological separation–individuation. A noteworthy finding of the hierarchical regression analysis was that the predictive effect of negative paternal attitudes remained significant, albeit small, even after controlling for the factors influencing fatherhood. The findings were discussed within the framework of the existing literature, and recommendations were provided for future research.

Türkiye’de Genç Yetişkinlerde Ayrılma-Bireyleşme Düzeyinin Algılanan Baba Tutumları İle İlişkisinin Aile Bağlamında İncelenmesi

Abstract

Bu çalışmada, Türkiye’de algılanan baba tutumları ile genç yetişkinlerde ayrılma- bireyleşme sürecinin ilişkisini ve bu ilişkide babalığı etkileyen faktörler (anne-baba ilişkisi, babayla ilişkide anne desteği ve babanın kendi babasıyla ilişkisi) ve anne tutumlarının olası etkilerinin incelenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Katılımcıların sayısı 640’ı kadın 115’i erkek olmak üzere toplamda 755’tir. Katılımcıların tamamı Türkiye’dendir. Veriler katılımcılardan Kişisel Bilgi Formu, Baba Varlığı Ölçeği, Kısaltılmış Algılanan Ebeveyn Tutumları Ölçeği–Çocuk Formu, Çocuk Yetiştirme Stilleri Ölçeği aracılığıyla çevrimiçi olarak toplanmıştır. Veriler, Korelasyon, Çoklu Doğrusal Regresyon ve Hiyerarşik Regresyon analizleri ile incelenmiştir. Yapılan analiz sonuçları, ayrılma-bireyleşme patoloji düzeyinin olumlu anne ve baba tutumları, olumlu anne-baba ilişkisi, babayla ilişkide anne desteği ve babanın kendi babasıyla olumlu ilişkisi ile negatif yönde; olumsuz anne ve baba tutumlarıyla ise pozitif yönde ilişki olduğunu göstermiştir. Anne-baba ilişkisi ve olumsuz baba tutumlarının (reddedicilik ve sıkı denetim/kontrol) ayrılma-bireyleşme patoloji düzeyi üzerinde anlamlı yordayıcı gücü olduğu bulunmuştur. Hiyerarşik Regresyon analizlerinin en dikkat çekici sonucu ise babalığı etkileyen faktörler kontrol edildiğinde bile olumsuz baba tutumlarının yordayıcı gücünün küçük de olsa devam etmesidir. Elde edilen sonuçlar alan yazın bulguları doğrultusunda tartışılmış ve gelecekte yapılacak olası çalışmalar için önerilerde bulunulmuştur.
