Journal of Selcuk Communication, which is the Academic Journal of Selcuk University Faculty of Communication, is a journal, thought, application-based research etc. on all communication sciences (public relations, advertising, journalism, radio, television and cinema etc.). It is an academic  peer-reviewed journal that includes qualified articles. In this context, our journal, which includes scientific articles related to communication sciences and different disciplines, aims to contribute scientifically to the field of communication by presenting publications in accordance with academic standards.

Journal of Selcuk Communication is an academic, open-access, electronic and peer-reviewed journal published two times a year, in April and October. Studies submitted to the journal are pre-evaluated by the editorial board and the studies deemed appropriate are published with the positive reports of at least two referees. It is open to all articles and reviews in the field of media and communication studies.

WRITING RULES


1. All articles submitted to Journal of Selcuk Communication for evaluation should be prepared on the sample article template (click to download the article template). Once the article template has been downloaded, the texts should be adapted to the relevant parts of the template without any changes to the template. Papers that are not suitable for the template / prepared using the template will be returned to the author(s) without being evaluated. Other points to be considered are as follows:

  • Papers submitted to Selcuk Communication Journal should be prepared by using MS Office Word program, in A4 size, with 2.5 cm margins from the right, left, top and bottom edges, in normal writing style, in Calibri font, with 0nk first, then 6nk, with 1.25 indentation on the first line, with 1.5 line spacing and both side justified.
  • The Turkish and English titles of the papers should be written with the first letter of each word capitalized, left justified, and in 20 font size and bold.
  • The name and surname of the author(s) should be written in Calibri 16 font size, normal and left justified.
  • Öz and Abstract titles should be written in Calibri 12 font size and normal font style.
  • Extended Abstract (Extended English/Turkish Abstract), Introduction, Conclusion, Bibliography and all other main headings should be written left justified, all capital letters, in 14 font size, 0 indented and bold. In the second level sub-headings, only the first letter of the words should be capitalized, left justified, in 14 font size, with 1.25 indentation on the first line and bold.
  • Abstracts in Turkish and English should be written in 11 font size and normal style. Turkish and English keywords should be written in 11 font size with the first letters capitalized.
  • Papers should generally follow the flow of Turkish Title, Abstract, Keywords, English Title, Abstract, Keywords, Introduction, Main Text, Conclusion, Extended English/Turkish Abstract and Bibliography.
  • Papers should contain a minimum of 5000 words and a maximum of 9000 words, including extended abstracts.
  • In each paper, Turkish and English abstracts should be included in the range of minimum 150 and maximum 250 words, and Keywords should consist of minimum 5 and maximum 7 words. Abstracts should be in English for studies prepared in Turkish, abstracts should be in Turkish for studies prepared in English. The prepared abstract should briefly include the purpose, scope, problem, method, universe/sample group of the study and the important findings and results obtained.
  • The extended abstract should be written in English for studies written in Turkish, and in Turkish for studies written in English. The Extended Abstract in English/Turkish should consist of at least 750 and maximum 1500 words and should be written in 12 font size. The prepared abstract should be a holistic text containing the purpose, scope, theoretical framework, method, findings and results of the study and should include all relevant parts of the study. The Extended Abstract should be placed at the end of each work, just before the Bibliography, and the paper should be uploaded to the system as a single MS Word file.


2 . The 6th edition of APA (American Psychological Association), which is the method of referencing the text, should be used for referencing. In both the citations and the bibliography part, the authors should follow the spelling rules and format specified in the American Psychological Association Publication Guide published by the American Psychological Association. In this regard, the guide named "APA 6 Rules" Guide for Referencing in Scientific Publications, Table and Figure Creation" prepared by Turkish Librarians Association should be used. 3. The references in the articles sent to our journal must be created with the reference management tool in MS Office Word. Manual references and bibliography are not accepted. (Click to reach the informative video about MS Office Word reference management)


4. All legal responsibility for the content of the articles belongs to the author(s).


5. More than one article of the author (s) in one issue cannot be published.


6. The academic evaluation process can be run if the author(s) who upload an article in one call of our journal apply with a publication in a foreign language in the next call. (An author who uploads an article in the January call can only apply with an article in a foreign language in the April call.)


7. In each publication call period, only one article of the author(s) is included in the evaluation. In case of multiple uploads, only one work is included in the evaluation process. This condition is valid for both single author and multi-authored articles. There are no exceptions to this condition.


8. Articles submitted to our journal for publication must not have been sent to another journal or published in any media. In our journal, only articles produced from doctoral dissertations – with limited number - are evaluated. (Articles produced from doctoral dissertations, if peer-review process is completed, are placed in the order of publication and published in subsequent issues.)


9. Full texts of articles presented in scientific meetings (congresses, symposiums, etc.) can be sent to our journal, provided that they have not been published digitally or in print and converted into article format / content.


10. The number of articles to be published in each issue is determined by the editorial board and limited in number. The number of articles from various research type will in each issue is under the authority of the editorial board. For this reason, the articles that are accepted as a result of the peer-reviewing process are put in order and put on hold for the progressive issues. Studies uploaded in a foreign language are given priority regardless of the date of upload and acceptance. No commitment is made regarding the issue in which the accepted studies will be published.


11. Submission of articles to Journal of Selcuk Communication is made only through the DergiPark system. In order to submit an article to the journal, you must have a DergiPark user account and ORCID ID number.


12. In the main heading of the articles, expressions regarding the brand name, institution name and the object of examination (XX Brand Sample, XX Corporation Sample, XX Film Sample, XX Advertisement Sample) should not be included.


13. All articles submitted to our journal are checked for originality both before they are evaluated by the editorial board and after the peer-reviewing process is completed and the articles is included in the publication process.


14. The upper limit of the acceptable similarity rate for the studies submitted to our journal is 15%. Articles exceeding this limit will be rejected without being evaluated. Therefore, authors are required to determine the similarity rate before submitting their work to our journal. Since similarity programs work according to certain parameters, if there is a difference between the similarity rate of the author and the editorial board of Journal of Selcuk Communication, the rate of Journal of Selcuk Communication will be taken as basis. Before uploading to the relevant call of the journal, the authors who check the similarity are required to select the "no repository" option. Otherwise, since the similarity rate of the articles in editorial control will be displayed as 100%, the artcile will not be evaluated.


15. Since the articles for which revisions are requested during the peer-reviewing process are submitted to the referee review again regardless of the type of revision (minor / major), all required corrections in the articles must be marked in red and uploaded. For artciles not uploaded in this way, the peer-reviewing will be terminated and the article will be returned to the author.


16. If the author(s) use the note panel as a personal communication tool to the referee or use their anonymized identities to reveal their anonymized identities, the article will be rejected on the grounds of ethical violation and author(s) will be prevented from uploading an article to any call of the Journal of Selcuk Communication.


Our journal undertakes to apply the highest standards of academic publication ethics and to comply with the following principles of the Publication Ethics and Malpractice Statement. This declaration was created on the basis of the recommendations and guidelines developed by the organizations named Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), Council of Science Editors (CSE), World Association of Medical Editors (WAME) and International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE).


The studies submitted to our journal for evaluation should not have been previously published in another medium (including papers presented in congresses and symposiums and published full text, book chapters, etc.) or sent to another journal to be evaluated during the evaluation process. Studies submitted for publication should not be published in another language, provided that the content remains the same.


The similarity rate of the studies submitted to our journal should be 15% or less. The editorial board reserves the right to have the similarity assessment applied before, after the refereeing process or at any time it wishes. Studies containing data (not properly collected or manipulated) that could be considered within the scope of unauthorized transfers or forgery from the author that may be considered within the scope of plagiarism are not published in the journal, even if they have received approval from the referees.


The articles submitted to the journal are evaluated by the editorial board at the first stage. At this stage, studies that are not suitable in terms of form and content are rejected before the peer review process is initiated. The refereeing process is initiated for the works that pass the editorial evaluation successfully. In our journal, blind peer-review is applied and at least two referees are appointed for each study. Referees are at least equal to the author or higher in terms of title. On the other hand, referees are appointed from different institutions with the author. Works that receive refusal from two referees are directly rejected, and if one of the referees refuses, a third referee is appointed.



Our journal reserves the right to cancel the referees' evaluations that are not suitable for the content or do not have a scientific quality and not to share them with the author. In our journal, only articles produced from doctoral dissertations – with limited number - are evaluated. (Articles produced from doctoral dissertations, if peer-review process is completed, are placed in the order of publication and published in subsequent issues.)

Editors' Responsibilities

Editors are responsible for every publication published in the journal. In the context of this responsibility, editors have the following roles and responsibilities:

• Making efforts to meet the information needs of readers and writers,
• Continuous improvement of the journal,
• Conducting processes to improve the quality of the studies published in the journal,
• Supporting freedom of thought,
• Ensuring academic integrity,
• Continuing business processes without compromising intellectual property rights and ethical standards,
• Showing clarity and transparency in terms of publication in matters that require correction and explanation.

Responsibilities of the Referees

The evaluation of all studies by "Blinding Refereeing" directly affects the quality of the publication. This process provides confidence through objective and independent evaluation of the publication. Journal of Selcuk Communication evaluation process is carried out with the principle of double-blind review. Referees cannot contact the authors directly, evaluations and comments are submitted through the journal management system. In this process, referee comments on evaluation forms and full texts are sent to the author (s) through the editor. In this context, it is expected that referees evaluating a study for our journal will have the following ethical responsibilities:

• Should only accept study evaluation related to the field of expertise.
• It should evaluate in impartiality and confidentiality.
• If he / she thinks that he / she faces a conflict of interest during the evaluation process, he / she should refuse to examine the study and inform the editor of the journal.
• Due to the confidentiality principle, they should destroy the studies they examine after the evaluation process. They can only use the final versions of the studies they have reviewed, only after they are published.
• Make the assessment objectively only in relation to the content of the study. It should not allow nationality, gender, religious beliefs, political beliefs, and commercial concerns to influence the assessment.
• The assessment should be made in a constructive and courteous language. He should not make derogatory personal comments that contain hostility, slander and insult.
• They should perform the work they have accepted to evaluate, in a timely manner and with the above ethical responsibilities.

Responsibilities of the Authors

The author(s) who submit the Journal of Selcuk İletisim work are expected to comply with the following ethical responsibilities:

• It is expected that the works submitted by the author (s) will be original. If the author (s) benefit from or use other studies, they must cite and / or quote completely and accurately.
• People who do not contribute to the content intellectually in the creation of the study should not be specified as authors.
• The situations and relationships of all the works submitted for publication that may create a conflict of interest, if any, should be explained.
• In the framework of evaluation processes, raw data related to their articles may be requested from the author (s), in such a case, the author (s) should be ready to present the expected data and information to the editorial board and scientific board.
• The author (s) must have a document showing that they have the right to use the data used, the necessary permissions for the research / analysis, or that the consent of the experimental subjects has been obtained.
• In the event that the author (s) notices a mistake or error in their published work, early appearance or evaluation stage, the journal editor or publisher has an obligation to cooperate with the editor in informing, correcting or withdrawing.
• Authors cannot have their work in the application process of more than one journal at the same time. Each application can be started following completion of the previous application. Work published in another journal cannot be sent to us.
• Changing the author responsibilities of a study whose evaluation process has started (such as adding an author, changing the order of the author, removing the author) cannot be proposed.

Relations with the Reader

Editors should make decisions by considering the knowledge, skills and experience expectations of all readers, researchers and practitioners. The published studies should be paid attention to the readers, researchers, practitioners and contributors to the scientific literature and to be original. In addition, editors are obliged to take into account the feedback from readers, researchers and practitioners and to provide explanatory and informative feedback.

Relations with the Author

Editors’ duties and responsibilities towards authors are as follows:

• Editors should make positive or negative decisions based on the importance of the work, its original value, validity, clarity of expression, and the journal's goals and objectives.
• Unless the studies that are suitable for the scope of the publication do not have serious problems, they should be included in the pre-evaluation stage.
• Editors should not ignore positive referee suggestions unless there is a serious problem with the work.
• New editors should not change the decisions made by the previous editor (s) regarding the work, unless there is a serious problem.
• "Blind Review and Evaluation Process" must be published and editors must prevent deviations that may occur in the defined processes.
• Editors should publish a "Author's Guide" detailing every subject that will be expected of them by the authors. These guides should be updated periodically.
• An explanatory and informative notification and feedback should be provided to the authors.

Relations with Referees

The duties and responsibilities of editors towards referees are as follows:

• It should determine the referees in accordance with the subject of the study.
• It is obliged to provide the information and guides that referees will need during the evaluation phase.
• It has to check whether there is a conflict of interest between the authors and referees.
• In the context of blinding refereeing, the identity information of the referees should be kept confidential.
• Encourage referees to consider working in an impartial, scientific and objective language.
• Evaluate the referees with criteria such as timely return and performance.
• It should determine practices and policies that increase the performance of referees.
• Take the necessary steps to dynamically update the referee pool.
• Avoid impolite and unscientific evaluations.
• Take steps to ensure that the referee pool is made up of a broad spectrum.

Relations with the Editorial Board

Editors should ensure that all editorial board members advance processes in accordance with editorial policies and guidelines. The editorial board should inform its members about the publication policies and keep them informed of the developments. The new editorial board should educate its members on editorial policies and provide the information they need.

In addition, the editors;

• Editorial board members should ensure that they evaluate the work impartially and independently.
• Identify new editorial board members who are capable and appropriate to contribute.
• The editorial board should send the works appropriate to the field of expertise of the members for evaluation.
• Should be in regular interaction with the editorial board.
• Organize meetings with the editorial board at regular intervals for the development of the publication policies and the journal.

Editorial and blind review processes
Editors; It is obliged to implement the "Blind Refereeing and Evaluation Process" policies in the journal publishing policies. In this context, editors ensure that each work is completed in a fair, impartial and timely evaluation process.

Quality assurance
Editors; is responsible for publishing every article published in the journal in accordance with the journal publishing policies and international standards.

Protection of personal data
Editors; It is obliged to ensure the protection of personal data regarding the subjects or images in the evaluated studies. Unless the express consent of the individuals used in the studies is documented, it is responsible for refusing to work. In addition, the editors; is responsible for protecting the individual data of the author, reviewer and readers.

Ethics committee, human and animal rights
Editors; is obliged to ensure the protection of human and animal rights in the evaluated studies. Ethics committee approval for the subjects used in the studies is responsible for refusing to study in cases where there are no permissions for experimental research.
Prevention against possible misconduct and misconduct
Editors; is obliged to take precautions against possible abuse and misconduct. In addition to conducting a meticulous and objective investigation in determining and evaluating complaints regarding this situation, it is among the editor's responsibilities to share the findings on the subject.

To ensure academic publication integrity
Editors should ensure that any errors, inconsistencies, or misleading judgments in the work are quickly corrected.

Protection of intellectual property rights
Editors; It is obliged to protect the intellectual property rights of all published articles and to defend the rights of the journal and the author (s) in possible violations. In addition, editors are obliged to take the necessary measures to ensure that the content in all published articles does not violate the intellectual property rights of other publications.

Constructiveness and openness to discussion
Editors;
• Should take into account convincing criticisms of the works published in the journal and display a constructive attitude towards these criticisms.
• The author (s) of the criticized studies should give the right to reply.
• Should not ignore or exclude studies with negative results.

Complaints
Editors; is responsible for responding in an enlightening and descriptive manner by carefully examining the complaints from authors, referees or readers.

Political and Commercial concerns
Journal owner, publisher, and any other political or commercial aspect does not affect the independent decision-making of the editors.

Conflicts of interest
Editors; It guarantees the completion of the publication process of the studies in an independent and impartial manner, taking into account the conflicts of interest between the author (s), referees and other editors.
Publisher's Ethical Responsibilities
The Board of Directors of the Journal acts with the awareness of the following ethical responsibilities:
• Editors are responsible for all processes of work submitted to the journal. In this context, the decision makers are editors, regardless of economic or political gains.
• The independent editor commits to making the decision.
•Journal of Selcuk Communication protects the property and copyright of every published article and undertakes the obligation to keep the records of every published copy.
• Has the responsibility to take precautions for all kinds of scientific misconduct, citation fraud and plagiarism regarding editors.

Publisher's Ethical Responsibilities
The Board of Directors of the Journal acts with the awareness of the following ethical responsibilities:
