Book Review: Naturalistic Developmental Behavioral Interventions for Children with Developmental Disabilities

Abstract

Naturalistic developmental behavioral interventions (NDBIs) are intervention approaches that integrate principles of applied behavior analysis (ABA) and aim to support the development of young children, particularly those with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) (Murillo-Candelas & Cragin, 2023). NDBIs share several common features, including delivering instruction in natural settings and daily routines, incorporating children’s interests and choices, sharing control between adults and children, and using natural reinforcers (Schreibman et al., 2015). Research indicates that NDBIs can have positive effects, particularly on social communication, language, play, and cognitive development (Crank et al., 2021). In recent years, NDBIs have gained prominence in the literature as highly effective approaches for educating children with developmental disabilities. However, implementation resources and training for these models are primarily based in the United States, which substantially limits access for practitioners and researchers in Türkiye. This situation highlights the need for Turkish-language resources that address NDBI principles and models comprehensively, systematically, and with a practical focus. Edited by three scholars and featuring contributions from 26 authors, this book comprises five parts, 19 chapters, and 536 pages. By addressing these access and language barriers, it brings current theoretical knowledge to the national literature, filling an important gap in the field and supporting the wider adoption and appropriate implementation of these models in Türkiye.
