Labor Use by Gender in Greenhouse Pepper Production and Women’s Role in Farm Decisions: A Case Study from Aksu District of Antalya Province, Türkiye
Öz
This study aims to examine the use of labor according to gender in greenhouse pepper production and the role of female in farm decisions. The main material of the research consists of primary data obtained through a survey of 64 farms engaged in greenhouse pepper cultivation in the Aksu district of Antalya province. The surveys were conducted through face-to-face interviews with female producers. According to the research findings, the average age of female engaged in pepper cultivation in the examined farms was 47 years, and their average experience in greenhouse pepper cultivation was determined to be 7.05 years. The total labor force used in pepper cultivation was calculated as 139.34 hours/year per decare; 63.70% of this was male labor and 36.30% was female labor. In terms of labor force utilization within the family, it was determined that men were involved in plowing, irrigation, fertilization, shadow powder application, loading, and transportation, while female worked alongside men in solarization, planting seedling, hoeing, stringing, pruning, and harvesting. Furthermore, the fact that 56.06% of the foreign labor force used in farms consists of female shows that female’s labor is not limited to family farms but occupies an important place in the agricultural labor force. However, despite female’s high labor contribution, it was determined that their effectiveness in farm management and decision-making processes remains limited. In this context, it is important to develop policies aimed at increasing the participation of female producers in agricultural education, extension, cooperatives, and marketing activities.
