Dr. Akkın is an expert in Social and Political Philosophy, 20th Century Philosophy, and Philosophy of Art. They recently conducted postdoctoral research at Utrecht University in the Department of Media and Culture, as a guest of Dr. Kathrine Thiele from 2022 to 2024. During this time, Akkın's research was funded by the TUBİTAK-BIDEB 2219 Postdoctoral Research Fellowship Program. Their doctoral thesis, completed at METU in 2017, focused on the political consequences of the ontology of becoming in contemporary art, with a particular emphasis on Deleuze's philosophy of "difference" and "becoming." In their Master's Thesis, completed at METU in 2011, they explored the possibility of participatory democracy through the lens of Hannah Arendt's 'action theory,' Jean Jacques Rousseau's conception of 'direct democracy,' and Jürgen Habermas' 'communicative action' theory and 'decentralized participation models.'
Akkın is a referee for several reputable philosophy and social sciences journals, including Deleuze and Guattari Studies, FLSF, Kilikya, Beytulhikme, Hacettepe University Faculty of Letters Journal, Dört Öge, Vira-Verita E-Dergi, and Marmara University Political Sciences Journal.
Before their academic career, Akkın taught English at the Turkish American Association and various institutions affiliated with the Ministry of National Education between 2007 and 2010. From 2010 to 2017, they worked as a Research Assistant at METU Department of Philosophy as part of the Faculty Training Program (ÖYP). Since July 2017, they have been performing compulsory service at Ardahan University, where they served as the Founding Chair of the Department of Philosophy until December 2021, and as the Vice Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Letters until July 2022.
Akkın is a former performer of METU Players and has a special interest in theater, performance, and travel. They are also the general coordinator of the International Mythology Symposiums in 2019 and 2021, indicating their experience in organizing scientific events at national and international levels. Additionally, Akkın is a member of the Terra Critica research group and the Society for Social and Political Philosophy.
