The Relationship Between 7th and 8th Grade Students' Scientific Creativity Levels and Their Attitudes Toward Science Course and Laboratory Applications

Abstract

Purpose: This study was conducted to determine the relationship between the scientific creativity levels of seventh and eighth-grade students and their attitudes towards science courses and laboratory applications. Method: The research sample consists of 341 students in the 7th and 8th grades at three middle schools in the Battalgazi district of Malatya province. To determine students' scientific creativity levels, the Scientific Creativity Test (SCT), developed by Hu and Adey (2012) and adapted into Turkish by Deniş and Balım (2012), was applied. To measure students' attitudes towards science and technology courses, the “Science and Technology Attitude Scale (STAS),” prepared by Keçeci and Zengin (2015), was used. To assess their attitudes towards science and technology laboratories, the “Science Laboratory Applications Attitude Scale (SLAAS),” developed by El-Gendy and adapted to science laboratories by Yeşilyurt (2003), was implemented. In the study, independent-samples t-tests, Pearson correlation analyses, and simple linear regression analyses were conducted to examine the relationship between the scientific creativity levels of 7th and 8th-grade students and their attitudes towards science course and laboratory applications. Findings:  A positive and significant correlation was found between SCT and STAS, SCT and SLAAS, and STAS and SLAAS. Furthermore, when the correlation between SCT and STAS was examined, it was observed that 95% of the variation in SCT explained by STAS. Similarly, when the correlation between SCT and SLAAS was analyzed, it was found that SCT explained 88% of the variation in SLAAS. Conclusion: According to the research results, we can say that students with high scientific creativity levels also have high attitudes towards science courses and laboratory practices.
