A Descriptive Content Analysis of Artificial Intelligence Studies with Primary and Pre-Service Primary School Teachers in Türkiye

Abstract

In this study, academic studies on artificial intelligence (AI) conducted with primary school teachers and pre-service primary school teachers in Türkiye were examined to determine current research trends. A descriptive content analysis method was employed including full-text accessible, Türkiye-affiliated studies retrieved from the National Thesis Centre (YÖKTEZ) and Google Scholar using AI and teacher-related keywords. A total of 25 studies, including 8 postgraduate theses and 17 journal articles, that met the predetermined criteria were analysed. The findings revealed a notable increase in research in recent years, with all theses conducted at the master's level. The most common research topics were participants’ views on AI, followed respectively by studies examining attitudes towards AI, AI literacy, AI anxiety, modelling with AI, and the effects of AI implementations. Methodologically, qualitative and quantitative approaches were used in nearly equal proportion, with survey and phenomenology designs being the most prominent. In addition, studies with primary school teachers were more prevalent than those with pre-service teachers. Moreover, convenience sampling was preferred more, and surveys, scales and interview forms were the most frequently used data collection instruments. ANOVA, t-test, and content analysis were the primary data analysis techniques. Regarding geographical distribution, it was observed that most studies were conducted in the Black Sea and Central Anatolia regions. Overall, the study offers an overview of the scope and trends of AI studies conducted with primary and pre-service primary teachers in Türkiye thereby serving as a guiding reference for future AI studies and educational planning in the field.

Türkiye’de Sınıf Öğretmenleri ve Sınıf Öğretmeni Adayları ile Yürütülen Yapay Zekâ Çalışmalarının Betimsel İçerik Analizi

Abstract

Bu çalışmada, Türkiye’de sınıf öğretmenleri ve sınıf öğretmeni adaylarıyla yürütülen yapay zekâ (YZ) konulu akademik çalışmalar, mevcut araştırma eğilimlerini belirlemek amacıyla incelenmiştir. Araştırmada betimsel içerik analizi yöntemi uygulanmış olup, Yükseköğretim Kurulu Ulusal Tez Merkezi YÖKTEZ ve Google Akademik’te YZ ve öğretmenlikle ilgili anahtar kelimelerle yapılan taramalardan elde edilen, tam metnine ulaşılabilen ve Türkiye adresli çalışmalar değerlendirmeye alınmıştır. Toplamda, 8 lisansüstü tez ve 17 makale olmak üzere ölçütleri karşılayan 25 çalışma araştırmaya dâhil edilmiştir. Bulgular, son yıllarda bu alandaki araştırmalarda belirgin bir artış olduğunu ve tüm tezlerin yüksek lisans düzeyinde yürütüldüğünü ortaya koymuştur. Çalışmalarda ele alınan konular incelendiğinde, büyük çoğunluğunun YZ’ye yönelik görüşleri ele aldığı; bunu sırasıyla yapay zekâya yönelik tutumları, YZ okuryazarlığını, YZ kaygısını, YZ ile modelleme konularını ve YZ uygulamalarının etkilerini inceleyen çalışmaların izlediği görülmüştür. Yöntemsel açıdan, nitel ve nicel yaklaşımların benzer oranda tercih edildiği, tarama ve fenomenoloji desenlerinin en yaygın araştırma desenleri olduğu ortaya çıkmıştır. Ayrıca, sınıf öğretmenleriyle yapılan çalışmaların öğretmen adaylarıyla yapılanlara göre daha yaygın olduğu saptanmıştır. Uygun örneklemenin daha fazla kullanıldığı ve anket, ölçek ve görüşme formlarının çalışmalarda sıklıkla yer verilen veri toplama araçları olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Veri analizi açısından ise ANOVA, t-testi ve içerik analizi temel veri analiz teknikleri olarak öne çıkmıştır. Coğrafi dağılım açısından Karadeniz ve İç Anadolu bölgeleri, çalışmaların büyük ölçüde yoğunlaştığı bölgeler olarak belirlenmiştir. Bu bulgular doğrultusunda bu çalışma, Türkiye'de sınıf öğretmenleri ve sınıf öğretmeni adayları ile yürütülen YZ çalışmalarının kapsamına ve eğilimlerine ilişkin genel bir bakış sunarak alandaki gelecek YZ çalışmaları ve eğitim planlamaları için yol gösterici bir kaynak niteliği taşımaktadır.
