Stakeholder Voices on the Educational Status of Students Exposed to Seasonal Migration
Öz
This study aims to examine the educational status of primary and secondary school students from families exposed to seasonal agricultural worker migration, based on stakeholder opinions. This study, which addresses seasonal agricultural worker migration, a social issue worldwide and in Türkiye, and the educational deprivation experienced by the children of these families, is a qualitative case study based on qualitative research methods. The study group consisted of eight elementary school students, eight middle school students, six parents, eight elementary school classroom teachers, and eight middle school branch teachers from the school currently attended by the children. All the participants were from the region where the first author of this study works and had been forced to migrate seasonally on a regular basis in previous years. The data were collected through semi-structured interview forms and analyzed through thematic analysis. According to the findings, the most important reasons for the children of families working as seasonal agricultural workers being exposed to migration are the student's care needs and livelihood pressure. The children of migrant families were away from school for long periods of time, and this situation negatively affected their academic achievement. The findings showed that seasonal migration caused psychosocial consequences in students, such as academic failure, hopelessness, loss of motivation, learned helplessness, and, as a result, aimlessness. Consequently, migration is a major obstacle to the education of students of seasonal agricultural worker families and their ability to build their future lives, and authorities need to address this issue seriously, along with other migration problems. Based on the results, it is recommended that multi-stakeholder partnerships, digital tracking systems, and inclusive education-based support mechanisms be developed to ensure educational continuity for students affected by seasonal migration. In this context, it is important to implement comprehensive and sustainable education policies for families, students, and teachers.
