The Mediating Role of Instagram Addiction in the Relationship between Fear of Missing Out and Phubbing

Öz

This study investigates the mediating role of Instagram addiction in the relationship between Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) and phubbing. Findings reveal a significant positive relationship between FoMO, phubbing, and Instagram addiction. FoMO has a direct effect on both phubbing and Instagram addiction, while Instagram addiction directly affects phubbing. Furthermore, Instagram addiction was found to mediate the relationship between FoMO and phubbing through both full and partial mediation models. The results align with previous research, demonstrating that individuals with higher FoMO are more likely to engage in problematic social media use, leading to increased phubbing behavior. The study's findings offer insights into the psychological mechanisms underlying phubbing and suggest that addressing FoMO and social media addiction in psychological counseling could reduce phubbing behaviors. Future research could employ longitudinal methods to deepen the understanding of these relationships. Limitations include the self-report nature of the data and the predominantly female sample, which may affect the generalizability of the results.
