He works Bursa Uludag University, Agriculture Faculty, Department of Horticulture, Bursa, Türkiye. He studies mainly with table grapes, kiwifruit, breeding also some horticultural crops. He has been joining table grape and kiwifruit breeding programs in order to develop better quality new cultivars in diferent breeding programs. Main goal in the grape breeding program is to develop new seedless cultivars with a high competitive chance. The main selection criteria are that the seedless new cultivars are larger berry size (over 4 g) and resistant/tolerant to fungal diseases. Cross-breeding, embryo rescue and marker assisted selection methods used in this breeding programs. He also studies climate change effects on grapevine (Vitis spp.) and kiwifruit (Actinidia spp.) plants related with some physiological parameters. Dr.Atak has many studies on the determination of phenolic components in grapes (Vitis spp.) and their changes after different treatments, as well as on the evaluation of grapes and kiwifruit(Actinidia spp.) by drying and determining their nutritional content.
He is currently the Vice President of Vine and Berry Fruits of ISHS. He was the convener of the last kiwifruit symposium (X. International Symposium on Kiwifruit) under ISHS. Also he was the Convener of the “XIII. International Conference on Grapevine Breeding, Genetics and Management” 21-24 August 2023, Turkey (under ISHS).
